If you’ve perused the Kinky and Popular section of Fetlife or any stunning BDSM photography then you will have seen some great works of art made with rope. If you’ve always been enamoured by the intriguing images in erotic photography books which depict intricate rope bondage and would love to give it a try you may find that you have no clue how to take a pile of rope and turn it into a bondage playground. Today I’ll let you in on all the information you need when getting started in rope bondage. This guide will take you from the initial inkling if interest to just before you begin your first tie.

Forming the Fantasy

So what kind of rope bondage are you interested in? Do you want to suspend someone from the rafters? Would you like to bind your partner to the bed or other furniture? Or would you like to leave them immobile on the floor cocooned in rope? You don’t have to choose one over the other, do what you like! It just helps to know what you’re after when you’re gearing up and educating yourself. Planning ahead will allow you to concentrate on what you need and bypass the superfluous.

Gearing Up for Rope Bondage

To get started in basic rope bondage you’ll need a few basic supplies. You’ll need a basic after care kit, a clear and comfortable place to play, a few henks of rope, EMT shears or scissors and if you like – a couple of instructional books to get you going. Ensure your gear is all in good nick, you don’t want to find that in an emergency that your scissors wouldn’t cut through shit. If you don’t have a willing partner to sit still long enough for you to try and try again, invest in a store mannequin or even a cheap blow up doll. It’s a basic human form that will sit still for hours on end while you perfect your ties.

Learning the Ropes

Everyone was a beginner at some point. No one was born a rope expert so take your time and learn at your own pace. Have a look on YouTube for some videos by Two Knotty Boys. Here you’ll see really clear step by step instructions to create some very basic and intermediate ties. This way you can pause the video or back it up when you need to. They really are great tutorials and I myself have learned a thing or two from them. My favourite is the dragonfly sleeve.

Books are also a great way to get started in rope bondage The Two Knotty Boys have a couple of books which have excellent step by step photography and diagrams. They really bring the tutorials to life and make them easier to comprehend.
